Some kids snuck out of bed to grab food after bedtime. Stephen Defries snuck out to watch sport on TV through the staircase railing gaps.

A natural athlete, growing up in a sports driven household, Steve played everything he could get involved in, ultimately making it to a semi-professional level of NRL football. He learned firsthand what it feels like to compete at a high level — the pressure, the camaraderie, the heartbreak, the mental grind, the obsession with getting better.

But he also saw something else:

• The way the culture of sport exists beyond the game itself.

• The debates in pubs.

• The group chats (hello Supercoach widows).

• Sport as identity.

• Sport as community.

• Sport as language.

Years later, after religiously consuming every broadcast, podcast, and column he could find, one frustration became impossible to ignore:

Mainstream coverage didn’t sound like real fans anymore. The digital coverage didn’t bring to life the Australian community around the experience.
